Surfing in the Cayman Islands
Surfing in the Cayman Islands
If you're planning a vacation to the Grand Cayman Islands and want to take advantage of some first time surfing opportunities, there are some important tips to keep in mind. While surfing is a complicated sport, it is accessible to beginners who are willing to take some time to learn the basics and hit the waves with patience.
Summer is the best time to surf, and the latter part of summer is ideal surfing season in the Grand Caymans. If you're just starting out in surfing, we recommend checking out a local surfing school - there are many on the Island, and an even better option is if you take some classes in advance of your trip to the Caribbean.
At a surfing school you will learn the basics from equipment - you'll want to start off with an inexpensive foam board to learn on before you upgrade to a more advanced board - to surfer etiquette - make sure you pay attention to other surfers and never snake (steal) their waves. While your initial equipment might not conjure up romantic images of professional surfing, you can upgrade with time as your skills advance; you'll also need some basics like a leash (to make sure you don't lose your board in the waves), board wax (to improve friction), as well as a wet suit.
The Grand Caymans have some impressive waves, so make sure you take your time to learn the fundamentals before venturing out into the ocean. Even novices can have a great experience surfing in the Caymans if you put in the time to hone your skills in advance.
