Cayman Islands Conditions
The Caribbean is home to some of the world's finest beaches, and, subsequently, some of the best surfing spots. In general, the laid back atmosphere and impressive tropical beaches provides for opportune surfing, with large waves during peak surfing months for even the most adventurous surfer.
Located within the Northwest region of the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands are one of the top surfing spots in the entire Caribbean Sea. Situated a couple hundred miles from both Jamaica and Cuba, the Islands are well situated to take advantage of the tropical climate: the Gulf of Mexico's low pressure weather carries into the area, which can drive some impressive waves into the region.
With waves that carry as far away as the Eastern reach of the Pacific, surfing season peaks in August in the Caymans. While the area is occasionally hit by summer tropical storms and even hurricanes, most of the time the waves are impressively strong while being balanced enough to provide for great surfing.
During the summer months, waves generally reach five feet, with smaller waves in the three foot range. Certainly days will provide for better surfing than others, so make sure to check the forecast in advance of your visit. Another benefit to surfing in the Caymans is the lack of a rip tide and occasional waves that reach up to ten feet under ideal conditions.
Plan you surfing vacation for the late summer, but always check the hurricane forecast, as you'll want high waves but it's important to avoid the tropical storms that run through the Caribbean.
