Cayman Islands Waves

Cayman Islands Waves

The climate can be widely varied from day to day for surfers in the Cayman Islands: on one day you can find intimidating seven foot waves, while other days the ocean will be much more tame, producing waves closer to two to three feet. By planning a longer vacation, you can experience a diversity in wave conditions that provide for all types of surfing adventures.

When you hit the beach in the morning, you'll find that the ocean is mostly clean and warm during the summer surfing season. You may find that early in the morning, the waves don't seem impressive although it can pick up intra-day, so make sure to have patience. The waves generally break a few hundred yards from shore, although you'll need to paddle out to get the full experience. Even when the waves are low, you can find occasional breaks that might reach chest height.

The surfing culture is generally friendly and less competitive, with surfers often engaging in active conversation about what to expect from the day's waves. There are areas that are more competitive for advanced surfing such as Mariner Cove, but, in general, the scene is pretty friendly even for beginners. You can also find a variety of professional surfers offering lessons to beginners, as well as a number of pro shops providing equipment ranging from entry level to advanced gear.

To get the most from surfing in the Caymans, hit up a variety of beaches, as the surfing scene is highly varied from beach to beach.
